It's the Electoral College, Stupid!
Could an electoral tie be broken in the Senate with Dick Cheney casting the deciding vote? It's not as far-fetched as you may think.

This site, www.electoral-vote.com is very cool and gives you an up to date picture of the electoral college race.

Click here to go to a very cool electoral calculator to play with and see different scenarios.

One interesting wrinkle is what's happening in Colorado where there is a referendum to split the electoral votes. Now there's a poll that shows that a split is favored 47% to 35%.

The bottom line is that it's darn close. And the Republicans are going to try to win any way they can and it's up to us to stop them.

A puzzling characteristic of many people supporting John Kerry for president is that they actively support institutions which hinder change, i.e. the electoral college. Why do we need an electoral system? Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000. Is he our president? No. Try same-day voter registration or opening the polls on weekends. These are changes that would make the electoral issue obselete. Let's encourage people to vote, then provide representation for those people in our government. When you talk about the electoral college website as being "cool" and you get excited about electoral college scenarios, you are not promoting true change. In fact, this whole "Concerts for Change" phenomenon, although good activism, is misguided. Who really thinks that John Kerry could change the country? And, why does he need money from ordinary citizens when he and Edwards combined have more personal wealth than most of us could imagine. Please, let's try to talk about real issues instead of following the polls like some kind of sports event. As a musician, songwriter, American citizen, and someone interested in changing the status quo, it upsets me to see fellow artists behaving so ignorantly.

First of all, let me be clear. Electoral college = not cool. Electoral college web site = very cool.

Nobody thinks electing Kerry is going change everything about this country but we got to fight the battles we can win. And this organization is all about bringing in new people to the political process from which all those other things can flow.

Personally, I think election day should be a national holiday but I'm not going around being a pompous ass about it. We've got an election to win so get on board!!!!
