Big Debate Preparation
To cover the debates tonight for The Concerts for Change Blog, I am flying out to the heartland to watch the debates with a regular american couple who live and work in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. T. have invited me to their home so I can gauge the reaction to tonight's debate by two regular Mid-western folks. They also happen to be my in-laws.

My preparation for this will include taking 10mg of Oxycontin right when my plane takes off from LaGuardia airport. Then I will avail myself of an in-flight beverage, most likely a bourbon and diet coke. On my layover in Chicago I will seek out a beer and a Chicago style hot dog (It's like a hot dog with a salad on top!). Then onto the American Eagle-operated Jet that will fly me to Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International at which time I should be feeling pretty mellow.

Mr. T will pick me up and drive me to their modest two-story house on the corner and I will take my place on the living room La-Z-Boy to watch the most important presidential debate in my lifetime.

Mr. T is what some might term a "Anybody-but-Bush Republican". He is a small businessman and has voted Republican for as long as he can remember. A fiscal and foreign policy conservative though fairly socially liberal by Republican standards. However, the Iraq war has got him fired up and he swears he can't vote for Bush again. Can Kerry win him over in tonight's debate? Can Bush bring one lost sheep back in to the Republican fold?

Mrs. T is a proud liberal. She hates Bush, of course, but saw Nader speak earlier this summer and thought he made a lot of sense. Will Bush frighten her into the arms of Kerry? Can Kerry gain her trust on liberal issues?

This is the set-up folks. I'll be reporting back here to let you all know how it turns out. Use the comments to tell us how you are preparing for the debates.
